Thanks Terry, that sounds like how we have ours set up too. I just couldn't
work out where and if there was a value set to say when it's had enough of
trying to write to a device on the SAN.

Subject: RE: [Networker] Writing to LAN when SAN not available
Hi Caroline
The key to this is the client resource's 'Storage nodes' field. This field
determines which system will write the data to the output device (tape, disk,
etc.). If the client's own hostname is entered in this field, then the client
is, therefore, a storage node, and write its data to whatever output devices it
has been configured to use. If another systems's hostname is entered, then the
client will ALWAYS send its data via IP to that other system (which is the
storage node in this case).
Also, the 'Storage nodes' field is an ordered list. NetWorker will attempt to
use the first storage node in the list; if it can't, then it will attempt to
use the second storage node in the list, and so on. The "can't use" is defined
by being unable to mount an appropriate volume within the selected devices'
"Save Mount Timeout" attribute value.
So, in our case, if you have a system that usually backups up via the SAN but
the fallback is to back up over the LAN, you would specify, in the 'Storage
nodes' field for that system: [that system's name] - for backing itself up over
the SAN [other storage node] - for backup up the client over the LAN
in that order.
Hope this helps!

Subject: [Networker] Writing to LAN when SAN not available
Hi All,
We are doing some SAN backups, if for some reason the devices on the SAN aren't
available, what criteria does Networker use to decide when to write back to the
LAN.
We are using Networker V6.1.3.
Any input is appreciated, thanks,
Caroline
