In my experience, this kind of speed disparity isn't sufficiently large
enough for it to be the result of speed/duplex mismatch.

It's more like the differences that we see when one machine is an extra
router away   (i.e., client and server on same switch vs. client and
server on different switches with a couple of routers in between.)

When there have been settings mismatches, the fall in speed has
usually been 75 percent or worse.

What is the physical relationship between these machines and their
network?   But I agree that full duplex connnections (no flow control)
are always faster than their half duplex brethren.
