Re: [Networker] Merits of cloning versus dual backups?

Hey Terry,
Below is the output from this mminfo command on ssid "2788841986".
Volumes S00057 and S00366 contain the original and S00354 contain the
clone. As you can see there are many more chunks on the original than
in the clone and they have different file/rec numbers. So I don't think
we're looking at the wrong data. True we aren't looking at the actually
tape, but you wouldn't be able to restore from a clone if the media
database didn't keep the file/rec info separate for each volume.

Hang on, folks. Remember that mminfo looks at the NetWorker database,
not
at the actual tape, and that a clone is a copy of an original. I
suspect
what we're seeing is that, even though we're asking mminfo to tell us
about
the clone volume, it is reporting on the original volume.

Geez...I also thought it de-muxed the original data and wrote
consecutive blocks. That's why I think this list is such a great
resource.
I just compared an "original" tape with its "clone" and the datablocks
are virtually the same in terms of interleaving.
I was hoping my clone tapes would recover "faster" than the original.
I know that I can still achieve that if I want to clone all ssid's for
one particular client one-at-a-time.
I'm going to try the "staging" concept --> then clone to tape --> then
clone the clone tape (for verification) and finally send the "verified"
tape offsite for disaster recovery protection.
Thanks all...
Dale
