...also check firmware on the STK drives and any other STK devices (such as
the scsi router). This was once a problem with drives falling oss the SAN.

There are lots of things that might be going wrong here, and most of them
are related to your SAN.

The error 21 means no such device, which indicates that the tape device has
become unavailable.

Things to check are:

Whether you have set up persistent binding on the HBA. This is not always
possible with all HBAs. Emulex supports this, but Qlogic does not on
Windows. If a tape device suddenly moves to a different SCSI address the OS
will get very confused very quickly. Also check that you have recent and
supported firmware on your HBA.

Whether you have turned off Removable Storage service in Windows 2000. The
results of getting this wrong is again that devices may change name.

SCSI reserve/release. Sadly this is not supported in Windows, so the best
you can do is to make absolutely sure that no two storage nodes will access
the same device simultaneously. Some Fibre/SCSI routers may have buggy
firmware that doesn't release a lock. Check that you have up to date
firmware on all your SAN kit.

Bus resets. Notoriously difficult to track down but can cause mayhem. SAN
zoning can help a lot with this.

You have provided no info on your SAN so I cannot be any more specific. You
may only have a small SAN but that does not mean that it is simple or that
it works properly. A lot of SAN kit really can't be made to work well with
tape drives, and Windows 2000 has quite a few flaws that make your life
more "challenging".
