I make the 1,000,000 passes to be 1 pass per hour for 3400 years. If anyone
has had a tape wear out, it was obviously caused by something else - Not old
age.

Of course they are theoretical numbers. "Practical" numbers for a particular
installation based on it's unique variable operation may only be available
in approximation after years of experience on that site, so you have to work
with the theoretical figures.

Yes, DLT tapes will last 20-30 years in a climate-controlled vault with
the environment carefully regulated, and the tapes never used. In the real
world, well...
Also, the million passes is "head passes". In order to read or write a
complete tape, the DLT drive makes many (over 100 IIRC) head passes. And,
if the write isn't kept streaming, the drive must rewind and spin up again
before the next write will happen, which results in much more strain on
the tape and more head passes.
DLT tapes are also rated at over 10,000 load/unload cycles.
