Might not be applicable for this case but an interesting post from the past
which is valid for Windows systems at least...

Hi there!

A lighter weight way to determine the version of a client would be:

        nsradmin -s client -v1 -p390113 << EOF
        show version
        print
        EOF

This will connect to nsrexecd on the client (hence the -v1 -p390113 options.
nsrexecd is a version 1 RAP server and it's program number is 390113) and
print out the version of nsrexecd.

Another poster demonstrated the use of the 'what' command. If you don't
have this on your system, the command:
                strings -a file | grep '^@\(#\)'

will perform a similar service.

HTH,

Byron
