Let's see, you want the following:

1) Don't write to the old tapes.
2) Avoid manual intervention for recovery of data from old tapes.
3) Keep as few old tapes in the library as possible.

Here's an idea:

- Mark the old tapes readonly so NetWorker doesn't try to back up to them.
- Stage the most recent cycle or two from the DLTs to the SDLTs, since they
are most likely to be requested.
- Manually load older tapes as requested.

This approach might work for you.  What you eventually choose to do is
dependent on your specific desirables.  There's probably no single "best
practice" for this situation.

The problem with having mixed media is that I'm going to a library with
many fewer slots in it. I could insert some DLT7000's on an ad hoc
basis, I guess, but it kind of defeats the purpose of the newer media
not to load up the new library with them. I'm not looking forward to the
manual interventions that this may entail.
