I saw this error recently but in slightly different circumstances. We have an
old Auspex NFS server running SunOS. (Thank goodness it's being replaced!) It
holds all the home directories for all the students, faculty and staff here at
the U of Manitoba. This error showed up when trying to backup one student's home
directory.

It seems he was FTPing the file(s) in question from another system (Mac or
Windows) and this process was setting a bogus time stamp on the file of
something like a date in the 1910's. Touching the file fixed it.

A very weird and obscure problem.
