Jim-

We have a lot of NetWare clients, and we see slow backups with them too.
I saw your comment before about Legato advising you to split your slow
clients that use "All" into multiple clients, and I've been mulling it
over. I have some questions:

1) Did they say *why* this problem occurs? Because they're advising
you to split "All" into multiple clients that will likely run at once,
it clearly can't be to work around some deficiency in path searching in
NetWare itself.

If it's not the hardware, the network, the client OS or the server OS,
it seems pretty likely the problem is in the NetWorker client itself.
Did they acknowledge this and say they were working on fixing the client,
or was there vague handwaving and no real feel that there was going to
be an improvement in the future?

2) Did they say what the cutoff is, for "too many files" per client?
I'm trying to figure out how many chunks I would have to break stuff into,
to make sure all of our NetWare clients are under that magic size.

3) Do you have a case number or other info you could share? I'm
interested in calling Legato support regarding this same issue, and it
would be useful to me if I could reference your case, so I don't have
to go through days or weeks of background material to get to the point
where your call is at.

There is. Assuming you could get a list of the folder names on your
NetWare client into a text file, since you're using a UNIX NetWorker
server it would be possible to script the creation of the 150 client
necessary to go with this arrangement. You would use `nsradmin' to do this.
I've never created a client this way so I would have to go through some
trial and error, but it's definitely possible. Once you get the format
of the input to `nsradmin' correct, scripting the rest should be pretty
easy.
