Hey All,

Sun E450

Solaris 2.6

Solstice Backup 6.1.2

StorageTek 9310 Silo with 9940B drives

We just purchased a STK Silo with 9940B drives, and when I label a tape
I get the below messages.

01/28/03 09:34:23 nsrd: media notice: Volume "" on device
"/dev/rmt/18cbn": Block size is 80 bytes not 262144 bytes. Verify the
device configuration. Tape positioning by record is disabled.

01/28/03 09:34:23 nsrd: media warning: /dev/rmt/18cbn reading: Tape
label read: I/O error

01/28/03 09:34:25 nsrd: /dev/rmt/18cbn Label without mount operation in
progress

01/28/03 09:34:41 nsrd: media notice: Volume "Unknown" on device
"/dev/rmt/18cbn": Block size is 80 bytes not 262144 bytes. Verify the
device configuration. Tape positioning by record is disabled.

01/28/03 09:35:09 nsrd: /dev/rmt/18cbn Eject operation in progress

This was a brand new tape. Is the block size after labeling now 256K or
80bytes? Since it's been labeled will positioning by record be enabled?
When I relabel the tape I don't get the block size message, but I'm not
sure what size blocks the tape is currently using.

These drives will be used for DDS with a WIN2K system so I need to set a
block size. Any suggestion for the best block size for compatibility
and performance? I haven't been able to find much info on WIN2K max
block size, so if anyone knows where I can find that type of data I
would appreciate it.

I see similar questions answered in the archives, but I was wondering if
anyone had any more detail.

TIA,

Joel
