How can you force this on the server, since the legato server ( windows NT
server 4.0 machine) is what controls when the backups occur

You should really backup these directories from the server where they live.
Doing it the way you are, the data will cross the network twice. Also, what
happens when you backup two (more?) clients with the same automounted
directories? How many times do you want to backup the same data?

If you really want to force this, you need the -L parameter to save. The -x
param may also be relevant. You can add this in the backup command field of
the client. You may also need to use the -c option on recover. Check the man
page for save.
