No, I've not come across similar problem.
Why not run "ls -d /* > dirlist", and try backup individual directories
in dirlist one by one to find out which one gives you problem, and
trouble-shoot from there ?

By the way, have you tried backing up using other methods - say tar,
cpio, ufsdump or vxfsdump to either standalone tape drive or just
another disk partition ? if tar & cpio hangs but not ufsdump,
you may have created a recursive link somewhere.
