Tim: thanks for this. it works like a charm exactly as you describe.
at the risk of quibbling with good news, however, I have a couple of
problems with this. firstly why doesn't it work the way the paragraph
in the manual says it should? and secondly, isn't this a sysadmin
disaster
waiting to happen? what if I forget about this 3 years from now and
don't extend the schedule? surely there should be some way of
defining a schedule like this definitively once and for all.

Create a new schedule, something like "Full on 1st Sunday, skip all
others".  Use a period of month.  Go through the first month, and set
every day to "skip".

Now select the first Sunday of that month, and select an
"Override->full".
Go to the next month, and all days should be defaulting to "skip".
Again,
select "Overrides->full*".  Repeat for about 3 years.  :-)

If you're using a recent enough version of NetWorker, there might be
an
easier way to do this, but you don't list what version you're using,
so
I'm suggesting the way that has "worked" since time immemorial.
