Hello,

I recently attempted to recover a file under the /export/home file
system on client: client1. The recovery worked, but NetWorker initially
complained with a decode block error as follows:

Tue 17:35:33 rd=snode:/dev/nst2 mounted LTO Ultrium tape FUL362
Tue 17:35:35 client1:/export/home (11/24/02) starting read from FUL362
of 22 KB
Tue 17:36:59 media notice: Volume "FUL362" on device
"rd=snode:/dev/nst2": Cannot decode block. Verify the device
configuration. Tape positioning by record is disabled.
Tue 17:38:48 client1:/export/home (11/24/02) done reading 22 KB

I thought the recovery had failed, but then I noticed just after this
message, NetWorker was rewinding and then seeking forward x number of
records. At some point the message window indicated it was reading data
and the file recovered just fine. I checked the messages and daemon.log
files on the primary server (server) and there is no more information
than that posted above.

Here are the specs on our systems:
We are running 6.1.1.Build.238 on both our primary server (server) under
Solaris 2.8 (uname shows: SunOS server 5.8 Generic_108528-05 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Ultra-1) and on our storage node server (snode) under Linux Red Hat
7.3 (uname shows: Linux snode 2.4.18-17.7.xbigmem #1 SMP Tue Oct 8
12:07:59 EDT 2002 i686 unknown). The storage node server (snode) is
running a StorageTek L80 LTO tape library with four LTO drives. The
client in question (client1) was recovering the data from an LTO tape on
the storage node server's LTO library. The primary server uses a DLT
tape library, attached to itself, but that was not a factor in this
recovery. The LTO tape library uses two SCSI cables to connect to the
storage node server via two dual channel Ultra160 Adaptec 39160 PCI SCSI
cards. Two drives use one channel, the picker and the other two drives
use the other channel.

Would greatly appreciate any response on this error and what I can or
should do about it.

Thanks.

George
