We had major problems backing up W2k large volumes -
130 GB took 4 days. However we patched up to 6.1.2 of
Legato, and this dropped signinficantly to 30 hours,
still not brilliant but better.

We addressed Legato as to why the version would fix
the issue, and the responded with the following :

?Customer?s main issue was with the length of time it
took to backup millions of small files on W2K, against
the results they were getting on NT. The first
solution suggestion we suggested was tuning patch for
6.1.1, as I understand it, this did not make a major
difference. It was then suggested that they upgrade to
6.1.2 and this gave the effect of reducing their
backup from 4 days down to 30 hours.
The two engineering developments within the 6.1.2
release that will have made the main difference to
this performance are:
1. DNS caching implementation
2. Client resource lookups now cached.

Both of these have made a major difference to
performance in this environment.
Ongoing, Legato is aware of the issue with backing up
millions of small files, in any environment. We are
continuing to investigate this through the use of
technologies such as snapshots, either within the
existing hardware environment or using our own
SnapImage technology. Such solutions will be made
available as they are supported or developed.?

Hope this helps,

It took us two months to sort out, so hopefully this
will save you some time.
