Sounds like SCSI Bus Resets to me. Here's some supplemental info that you might
find useful:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q111837

<snip>
Summary
Tape API (application programming interface) functions may return an error code
of ERROR_BUS_RESET when operating on SCSI tape devices. In many cases, you can
ignore this error value and retry the operation. However, this error is fatal
if received during a series of write operations because a tape drive cannot
recover from a bus reset and continue writing.
<end snip>

The last sentence sums it up.....

Ok, to start with: the machines are connected to the same switch with the
disks...
They have emulex hba's...
the connection is as follows: W2K->HBA->switch->MDR->L3500

Why would you choose to do that? Seems like a sledgehammer approach.

There are lots of reasons why your tapes could be marked full prematurely.
In a pure SCSI environment it would be because of problems with
drives/tapes/cabling/terminators etc. You have an MDR so you have a SAN.
You have given us very little to go on, in terms of what your config is.
SAN introduces many more failure modes, such as bus resets, conflicts with
other devices or servers etc. You need to do a bit of work to find out what
the OS thinks is wrong. Check daemon.log and the event logger in W2K to see
whether there are device or controller errors. Then help us to help you by
telling us about your environment.
