On my TSM v5.5 server I have various clients that generate messages which
end up in the server activity log. Depending on whether these messages
have a prefix of ANE or ANS, the severity field either is or isn't
populated.

So a SELECT on the ACTLOG table shows that a message starting ANE4941I has
a severity of 'I' whereas a message starting with ANE4007E has a severity
of 'E'. This all works fine and any reporting (either using standard IBM
functionality or bespoke) can filter out the messages of no concern based
on severity.

The problem then comes with messages prefixed by ANS. A similar SELECT on
the ACTLOG table shows that messages beginning ANS4083I, ANS4251W and
ANS4150E all have a null severity. Since I am only concerning myself with
messages of severity 'W' and 'E' there are problems which are not being
flagged up. Even if I were able to expand this to include null severity
messages (and this is not the case using standard functionality in OR) I
would then have the problem of being alerted to messages that are of no
concern.

I logged a PMR to be told that this is working as designed, but I can
think of no logical explanation why the severity of ANE messages should be
based on the 8th character of the message, but the severity of ANS
messages is always null. Before I go down the route of raising a DCR, can
anybody think of a reason why the current implementation is the best
design choice?
