TKutil,

1. VDR is a disk-to-disk inline deduplicated backup solution for and
from VMware.
2. VCB will be discontinued and is not the way forward in the long run.
3. VDR still has many gaps around functionality but in its simplest form
works.
4. VMware has made available Storage API's that will make it possible
for 3rd parties, like IBM, to get direct access to VMDK files and back
them up, this is very exciting and I cannot wait for this to transpire.

I heard faint rumors that IBM will be supporting the API's later this
year in an upgrade but nothing further.

VDR is a good solution in addition to TSM backups especially if your
VM's is version 7 as only changed-blocks will be backed up, this speeds
up the complete backups immensely but - like i said - VDR was never
meant to be a backup replacement, only a cheap easy solution for SMB's etc.

I have used VCB in the past with Networker and understand how that works as far 
as configuration, but have no experience with VDR. To me it looks like VDR is a 
disk-to-disk type backup, but I'm wondering if Tivoli has the ability to write 
to tape?
