allmost been there (only have 10 years retention for this data). Initially,
we retired an oracle database on NT4 (don´t remenber the oracle version,
current in 1999/2000) to our old TSM 3.7 on a mainframe. In the meantime we
migrated TSM to AIX and the to Sun, with two changes in tape technology.
Oracle export is really one friend I have found working well: we recently
restored the export to an interrim W2K3 system and imported the data into
an oracle 10 database on solaris, no hickups, no flaws.
ASCII logs are another way to go (archiving by date), although I agree that
finding data may be somewhat challenging.
If you are able to plan ahead for regulatory compliance, an archiving
system with TSM or SSAM  as backend will definitely be the best way to go.
Media change is not the problem, the data format and data indexing is!
