When you start getting issues like this, it's sometimes hard to figure
out. But I'd say it's more likely the new media.
Sometimes you'll get a batch with 3-4 bad cartridges, and the only thing
to do is ditch them. And if you're having heat issues, I'd guess it's
more likely affecting the media than the drives.

-Obviously, if the problem occurs only on 1 drive, with lots of
different cartridges, make the CE replace it no matter what his
diagnostics say.

-Make SURE you have NEW cleaning cartridges available in the library,
and have the 3584 autoclean on, not TSM clean, if at all possible.

-If you aren't convinced it's the media instead of the drives, I'd
suggest turning on CRC check on the storage pools, and doing AUDIT on
all the tapes that get created for a while. (There is a parm on AUDIT
now, so you can set up an automated admin schedule that says "run audit
on any volumes created in the last 24 hours").
That's not a big load on you, and it will prove that tapes are READABLE
just after they are written.

Subject: [ADSM-L] IBM 3588-F3B Tape Drive Question

Hi..............

We are starting to see media faults on long tape(new HP LTO3) runs
(2-4hrs) on our IBM 3588-F3B tape drives. IBM CE has done all of his
diagnostics which shows media faults. We are wondering if it may be
weak tape drives because of long tape drive runs.

Has anyone experience this type operation of the IBM 3588-FB3 tape
drives?? Could we be having long term heat issues in our Data Center
concerning tape drives??
