Hi Richard!
I realize that. We are using a 2.5 Tb. diskpool, so until now there was
no problem directing all backups to this pool. I think I will have to
start using the maximum file size on this pool, but I have to find a
value large enough to let only the really big ones go to tape directly,
to prevent contention on the tape drives.

I would not use a disk pool for large file backups: they are much
better suited to tape, where they stream and get directly onto the
desired target media.  Save disk pools of ordinary backups of numerous
files of modest size.
