Since SQL2000 is not involved, and I'm not doing VSS backups, the only prereqs
I saw were for SP2 on both the OS and SQL2005, which were met.
As a test, I dropped back to TDP 5.5.0.0 and it worked fine, but then it
stopped working when I upgraded to 5.5.2.0. I then dropped back to 5.5.0.0 and
upgraded to 5.5.1.0 and it is still working.
Apparently there is something in the TDP 5.5.2.0 that is more fussy?

Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo,
Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91'
typically means you do not have one of the prereqs installed.
Please double-check them.
