ASR isn't supported on W2K8. At this point, we're using the "wipe disk,
re-install OS, install client, then restore" approach. We're also
looking at WinPE.

I've opened a PMR with support, and will share the results once the
backup/restore process is consistently successful.

Thanks, [RC]

Before going to VMs we always loaded Windows first, then the TSM client
before doing restores. But then it was only selected directories. As
far as I know in order to do a BMR with TSM you need to use TSM to
create a automated recovery diskette. This is used to start TSM client
for the restore but we never looked in to it because it appeared that
each machine's recovery diskette was unique and this is not supported on
some of our machines.

[ADSM-L] Complete Restores of Windows (2008) Systems with the TSM Client

The existence of docs that describe the process of "Complete Restores of
Windows Systems with the TSM Client" implies that such is possible and
probable with W2K8 nodes. One of the Windows admins here has quite a bit
of effort into documenting the specifics required for this process to
work.

So far he has piled up quite a bit of negative evidence.

The most recent set of problems after restore are:

                 Windows update is dead.
Any changes to profiles are lost.
                 Error message related to
"C:\Windows\SysWOW64\iedkcs32.dll" and "entry:BrandIEActiveSetup" both
occur at login.

(The doc we're working with is:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=663&context=SSGSG7&q1=BMR&u
id=swg21164812&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8%E2%8C%A9=en )

We've used local and domain accounts to perform the backup and restore.

The OS is W2K8 SP2 (64bit)
The client is 5.5.2.0 (64bit)
The TSM server is 5.4.2.0 running on AIX 5200-09 (64bit).

I've searched the redbooks site, the Tivoli Information Center, the
ADSM-L search site, the fastback documentation, the doc on using WinPE
with BMR, etc. So far I'm finding anything that tells how to avoid these
problems with W2K8.

Is anyone on the list seeing success with W2K8 BMR using the TSM client
alone?

Thanks, [RC]
