Some real world experience is helpful. Thanks.

Currently my TSM server at this site is a P6-550. 10 LTO-4 drives.
Peaks
around 70% proc utilization with an average of 30%.

How would I need to size the library manager for a library of this
size
?

a library manager TSM instance is very small, you could run it on a
USB stick as database storage, even a small USB stick. The database
will usually contain only some libvolume records, so for a 10 000 slot
library, the database would maybe be about 1 MB in size, nothing to
worry about.

Are there limitations for how much data could be in the library?

No. the TSM library manager is usually not stored to store any client
data, just to manage the library. The TSM server that manages the
library for the other TSM servers has no knowledge of what data is on
a volume, just wether or not it contains any data at all (private/
scratch status).

I did see that TSM would need to be installed on the library manager.

'The library manager' as in a specific box? no, the library manager is
the TSM server instance that has the task of managing the library.

Extra licensing.

No.

A TSM library manager can be run on any TSM server box, it is very
little extra load. It just the designation of one of your TSM server
instances. Some people run a dedicated extra TSM instance for this
task, some just take one instance and have it take the role of
managing the library as one of the tasks of that TSM server. You could
start with one TSM server instance on one box, and add a second
instance on the same box once you feel the limits of the first TSM
server instance are reached (the database has become uncomfortably
large) and have the first instance keep all the data that it already
has and manage the library for the second TSM instance. No extra
hardware involved.

One option I was thinking of using was, create partitions of the 550,
one as the library manager.
And one as the TSM server using multiple TSM instances on it.
Or possible multiple partitions with individual TSM instances.

Can anyone recommend one method over the other ? And why ?

Thanks,
Duane

Duane,

There is a product called the Clareti Storage Director that will
allow
you to share a library and drives amongst multiple TSM servers.

This is basically a product not unlike a VTL, a bit overkill if your
only objective is to share a library. SCSI libs can be shared by TSM
natively. It's easy to configure and doesn't cost a thing, just:

1- configure TSM server2server communications for command routing
between the designated library manager and all other servers
2- define lib as shared=yes on the designated library manager
3- define lib as libtype=shared on all other servers
4- define drive paths for all drives to all servers on library manager

It should be somewhere in the IBM docs and maybe even in a redpaper
somewhere. On the other hand, it's so easy that the help command
should be all you need ;-)

Note: I've actually worked with the Gresham VTL before it was called a
Storage Director. It's a nice system, but not just for library sharing
with TSM. (If otoh, you happen to have other applications that would
want to use the same drives and library once in a while, please
consider Gresham as a real solution).

Good day everyone,

Does anyone have any experience sharing a single library with
multiple
TSM servers?

We purchased a Spectralogic T950 with LTO4 drives and the capacity of
the library is enormous.

And our amount of data is equally enormous, but certainly exceeds a
single TSM DB.

All backup data is from remote sites.

At a minimum what will I need to successfully use multiple AIX TSM
instances to utilize a single library ?

Thanks,

Duane
