A way to do this without shipping tape is to use a deduplication target.
Backup to a local dedupe device that replicates its backups to the
offsite location.  Dedupe will significantly reduce the amount of data
that has to be replicated every day (at least 10:1, more if you're doing
databases).  While you still need bandwidth, you don't need as much as
you would with backups without dedupe, and you'll have a local and a
remote copy without having to ship tape.
