we run AIX, W2K3 and Sun-TSM-Servers. A modern Win-TSM is great for TSM up
to mid-size setups and performance should not be an issue in your projected
environment. If it´s a Windows shop, stick to the os you know you can
handle. We run a couple of them with various IBM libraries including 3584
with LTO2, no major problems you would not have on another os. We currently
use a standard HP server with 0,8TB RAID5 SCSI disks for our filepool,
migrations run at approximately 35MB/s single session to LTO2 drives. You
get a great bang for the buck...
Use the savings to build a second TSM-DR-Server, use TSM-DRM facilities and
virtual volumes to snap your database and no os or so recovery would be
needed in case your primary TSM server crashes. TSM EE is needed anyway, so
why not use the goodies of DRM to have a great day even in the event of a
major crash: it´s all there and included!
Don´d get me wrong, in an enterprise environment, I certainly prefer Unix
in a true HA setup.
