David,

Get two quotes, one from an IBM partner for a Series P/AIX solution, and one
from a *different* IBM partner for a Series X/Linux solution. I suggest two
partners because if you use one they might try to skew the decision one way
or the other, depending on their sales quotas this month :)

Make sure that the two solutions are equivalent in terms of cpu grunt,
memory and as Orville has pointed out IO bandwidth. Big intel iron costs as
much as big unix iron - most of the components are the same anyhow - pci-x
adapters, memory and so on.

The difference then comes down to support costs, and you may be surprised as
the support costs for a "free" Linux operating system. AIX is also close to
free these days, but you still need to buy support.

I'd be interested to see which way you jump.

Look carefully at the IO load. Most x86 systems cannot handle as much IO on
their busses as the pSeries hardware does. What bandwidth do you have on
your network connection. Fourteen LTO drives is a lot of potential MB/sec,
but if you bottleneck things at the Ethernet adapter (or elsewhere), then
you don't have as much need for other IO bandwidth or need as much hardware.

What are experiences with running TSM server on Linux x86 box?
Mgmnt here wants to go that way to save dollars.

Currently have on AIX on a p660-6H1 with 4GB RAM and 4x 750 MHz procs.
3584 library FC attached with 14 LTO 2&3 drives. Backup from 450+
servers
about 2 TB per day and make offsite copies. Growing! So, I am
talking a heavy use server.

My choice for next year is to get a p550 or similar with more FC
adapters
etc. But, could run on Linux vs AIX on this H/W also.

Comments on:

1. TSM server on Linux 64 bit x86 (or is it AMD?)

2. TSM on p550 AIX vs Linux.

I just can't get much info.

Thanks,
