I've actually been wondering about this myself, in the contect of
whether to deploy a VTL solution or just use server-managed disk and
use serial disk volumes in TSM.  It seems to me that an advantage of
using a VTL (over server-managed disk) would be that you could switch
server platforms much more easily.
