Thx Steve & Del

The diskpool has caching disabled - so it's not a concern... I was just a bit
curios if that could trigger a "Compressed data grew"...

So it might be the thing with a lot of attachments in ZIP format... but
wouldn't that demand a lot of attachment to achieve this problem??

Another thing - I've experienced the same problem on SQL servers with TDP for
SQL... but have been led to believe that this was due to compressed database...
Therefore I believed it might have been a similarly problem with the
exchange... but if it's due to attachments - then I've got a problem...

I guess that in a perfect world it would be possible to use compression on
exchange - but if attachments are enough to ruin this... then I really need the
option not provided with the TDP agent... "COMPRESS ALWAYS" ;o(

Any other good ideas? Should I drop the use of TDP agents, and use NT backup to
create a dump file? Have anyone tried to make differential/incremental backups
with NT backup?

Regards
Flemming

Flemming,

See Del's explanation on that.
But again, I believe the failure is due to the combination of expanded data and
cached diskpools.
Can you verify whether your exchange diskpool has caching turned on?

Thanks Steve

Will this generate the error "Compressed data grew"?

Flemming,

I suspect the problem is not in the compression, per se, but in the fact that
(I am guessing) you are sending the backup to a diskpool that has caching
turned on. What I have experienced in the past with TDP is that the TDP only
"guesses" how large a given object is going to be when it sends it to the
diskpool during backup. When caching is turned on and the diskpool is full, it
first has to clear out enough old data to make room for the new. If it guessed
wrong on the final size, the backup will fail, because it didn't clear out
enough room for what was actually sent.

I would recommend turning caching off and migrating all the data out of the
diskpool and seeing if that corrects the problem.

Hi all

I have a "funny" problem - If I install the above mentioned TDP for Exchange
(dowsn't matter if it's versions for Exch. 5.5, 2000 or 2003), and enable
compression the backup typically functions without any problems... At start
anyway - after a given period of time (can be a week, a month, a year you name
it) the full backup fails with the errormessage "COMPRESSED DATA GREW..." - so
somewhere along the road the Exchange database suddenly becomes compressed.

The funny thing, is that noone seems to be aware of this should happen (I've
asked all the Exchange experts I know - same answer: not to their knowledge)!

So where does all this leave me? Should I never use compression? Are there
anyone who knows more about Exchange than my experts do ;o) ?

In this situation it would be nice if the "COMPRESS ALWAYS" function were
enabled in the TDP agent....

Regards
Flemming
