I'm not aware of the subfile return codes being documented for customer
lookup.  But do have a look at the ANS1328W message explanation in the
very new 5.3.2 Messages manual, now available for download: it suggests
some things to look at, in general.

Also: the context you describe suggests that the client level is
probably quite old, so an upgrade there might help.
