There has been repeated discussion on this list about the fact that
version 5.3.0 of the client (you didn't say what version you are using)
doesn't fully support open file backups of Windows 2003 clients; Windows
handles open file backups in some cases through use of the Volume Shadow
Copy service.

Per Microsoft's support site, try upgrading Windows 2003 to SP1. If that
doesn't work, try waiting for 5.3.1 of the Windows client, which is
supposed to fix the issue.
