Backing up mail: mbox vs. maildir
2005-06-21 10:14:44
Hi TSM'ers,
currently we're backing up mail which is stored in "mbox"-format, i.e.
any tiny change to a folder results in a complete backup of the resp.
folder. This is currently tolerable with my site, but we consider using
the "maildir" format, where every message is stored in an individual file.
Some details:
# UoW-IMAP-server
# users: 16000+ ==> # of "mailbox"-files
# IMAP-proxies: 2
# mailhome-servers: 8, i.e. roughly 2000 users per server
# the servers are mainly HP-UX-boxes under HP-UX 11 and the MAILHOME
# resides on HP VA 7100 / 7410 RAID systems.
Questions:
Q1: Is anyone out there using "mbox"-format for the MAILHOME ?
Q2: If so, do You use some means in restricting the size of the INBOX ?
Q3: Has anyone gone through the process "mbox" ==> "maildir" ?
Q4: If so, what are the experiences ?
Q5: Any suggestions to other solutions for backup of mail ( UNIX-based ).
