We are currently in the same situation, 3584 6x LTO1 drives, all but 10
slots filled in the library. We have been look at switching the drives to
either lto2 or 3 and adding the expansion frame to the library. We are now
comparing these costs to a Virtual Tape solution, so far the Virtual tape
looks to be the way to go...No decisions made yet though

LTO3 can read but not write LTO1 media, however it can read and write LTO2
media. LTO1 can not read or write LTO3 or 2 media.

Just my 2 cents...

Regards,

Paul

Importance: High

hi all, i'll first explain the situation and then tell you what we want do
,
i appreciate every
reply and help you offer

TSM 5.2.4.0 on pSeries 640
2x8 port switch
LTO library L32 with 12 LTO1 drives
(and the same configuration on DR site)

as we approached the capacity of this one LTO library we have now choice
to upgrade the whole thing

option 1. the simplest
- add D52 (driveless) frame filled with 400 LTO1 tapes

option 2. my proposition
- replace 9 LTO1 drives with 9 LTO3 drives + additional D52 frame filled
with LTO3 cartridges

why 9 ? well i thought because we have a lot of archive data on LTO1 tapes
and considering the long expiration policies i think some day the LTO1
tapes
will get used to delete the stuff

i'm not sure but think that LTO3 drive cannot write LTO1 tapes am i right
?
i cant find on ibm site the interoperability matrix for LTO(drives/tapes)
,can someone point ? thanks

so if LTO3 drive can read from LTO1 tape , can LTO1 drive read LTO3 tape ?
(of course with LTO1 drive native speed)
(this is acceptable)

furthermore , one idea (not mine) was to install LTO3 drives and tapes and
migrate the whole thing to LTO3 tapes,
but what then with all the "empty" LTO1 tapes and 3 LTO1 drives ? :-)

boy ! i'm really confused and my chiefs want some solution proposition
one of them wants to stay in-line with new technologies and one is
for the simplest solution ... me ? i'm for new technology but i really in
this
moment don't know how it will look like and how the whole thing should
be done, and what and how is the smartest way to do this thing.

thats's pretty much it, i will surely find some other question as time
goes
by
and i'll ask them here coz this community is my only reference for
questions
like this, coz i know from experience ibm sales personel is really
confused
when we talk to them about our needs, and for tech guys from ibm they
got itchy all over when i call them on the phone ;-) LOL

nevermind ...
thanks for every letter you will write in reply
