Urgency dictates going straight to the Messages manual, which fully explains
what to do.  The dsmserv.lock file both carries information about the currently
running server, and serves as a lock point to prevent a second instance from
running.  Before trying to start the server afresh, always make sure that the
prior instance has been shut down.  You don't want to end up with a damaged
database.
