From what I tested recently the storage agent level which is higher
(5.2.1.0)then the server release level (5.2.0.0) does not work. When I
updated the server (which had to be done anyhow) to same release it worked.

So I think this storage agent and server release are somehow tied to
eachother in release levels.

Seems indeed as Zlatko says only 5.2.X.X releases are tested and 5.2.0.X
releases are not...

OTOH when bundle of patches goes through more testing, it is considered
less "temporary" and is called Maintenance. Going far back to AIX 3.2 or
4.1 I recall maintenance levels also mentioned as PTFs but haven't seen
this for newer versions and assumed that such practice was abandoned.

As I have not seen formal definition what is in and what is out of the
term PTF, I can only rely on my interpretation. As I am only a human being
and "to err is human" I should stand corrected.

Last minute clarification: If we stuck to the word, the mixing of PTFs
might be allowed. But will then the mixing of "interim fixes" be allowed
and supported?
Maybe v5.2.1.0 storage agent will be tested and supported with v5.2.0.0,
while it might be not with v5.2.0.1 or v5.2.1.1 server.
Where should we draw the border?

PTF == "Program Temporary Fix"
4.2.2.0, 5.2.1.0, etc., are PTFs

PTF != "Patch"
4.2.2.6, 5.2.1.1, etc. are patches (or "interim fixes", as we are now
being asked to call them)

It is conceivable that some APAR fixes could require you to update both
server and storage agent in order to acquire the fix. Outside of those
cases, the intent of "different PTF levels can be supported" statement
means that you can use 5.2.0.x server with 5.2.1.x storage agent, or
5.2.0.x storage agent with 5.2.1.x server, etc.

Quotations from IBM EMEA Announcement Letter ZP03-0215:
"With V5.2, different PTF levels can be supported, in most cases, between
the storage agent and Tivoli Storage Manager server."
"A Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 SAN storage agent will not operate with a
previous version of the Tivoli Storage Manager Server.
A Tivoli Storage Manager V5.2 Server will not operate with a previous
version of the Tivoli Storage Manager SAN storage agent."

PTF stands for Program Temporary Fix, in other words "patch". Thus the
statement says:
- mixing of neither versions (v5.2 + v4.2) nor releases (v5.1 + v5.2) is
allowed;
- you can mix patch levels but not maintenance. Example: 5.2.1.1 server
and 5.2.1.0 storage agent, but not 5.2.1.1 server and 5.2.0.0 storage
agent.
- you *can* (but without 100% promise) mix server and storage agent at
different patch levels, *in most cases* but not always! Some of the
combinations might be supported (but up to now I am not aware is the list
of "proper" combinations public). Guessing example: 5.2.1.1 server +
5.2.1.0 StA might be valid, while 5.2.1.0 server + 5.2.1.1 StA might still
be unsupported.

IMnsHO this clearly answers in writing (at the date of announcement - 8-th
of April) to concerns expressed.

Hi,
For versions prior TSM 5.2 TSM Server and Storage Agent must be SAME
versions.
1. A new feature in TSM 5.2 is that there can be different versions for
Server and SA (but I doesn't test it).
2. I doesn't see any information about using TSM Server 5.2 with Storage
Agent 5.1 and I thing that the new feature is valid only for mixing
different versions of TSM 5.2 Server and TSM 5.2 Agent. By sample - TSM
Server 5.2.1.1 and TSA 5.2.0.0 and etc.

Subject: Storage agent differrent version from TSM server.

Who has experience to use the storage agent that has a different version
with TSM Server?
The storage agent often hand and down. I plan to install fix or upgrade
the
storage agent.
But I don't know what the impact if I have upgrade to a newer version or
install fix only.
My environment is a TSM server 5.1.1.0 and Storage agent 5.1.1.0.

Thanks you for helping.
