Richard,

The answer to your question is no.
If you were looking to restore a single file, then you might need to rad through
a lot of tape, but if you are restoring a whole filespace then you shpuld see
data being restored straightaway. I found it a lot easier to deal with
backupsets taken at filespace level, in fact I can't remember now if I ever got
them to work trying them as a complete client.
Netware is finicky for syntax, say you are trying to restore client1 data:
filespace to client2 then the following syntax will work. NB. don't forget that
final backslash

load dsmc rest backupset -repl=n -su=y backupsetname client1\data:
client2\\data:\

Hope this helps.

Subject: Backuset processing question

Yesterday I asked about a long Netware restore.

In playing around, we are tring to perform a restore of the
backupset that we created.

The backup set looks like:
  4 tapes (IBM 3590)
  Size: 240gb
  Files: 938,617
  Backup from: NW5.1 SP3
  Restore to: NW5.1 SP3
  TSM client v5.1

When we start the backupset restore, it looks like the TSM server
is trying to read through all the tapes. It mounted the first tape
and appeared to read it for over an hour. It then mounted the second
tape . . . . and is still doing something with it after 30 min.
The Netware admin doesn't see any activity on the system we are
restoring to. Very weird.

Q) Does a backupset restore read through the entire backupset before
actually sending any data?

Thanks

Rick

(Isn't Netware such Fun . . . . )
