It's worse than that. The last 2 times our maintenance has come up for
renewal, it has taken OVER SIX MONTHS to get the price quotes worked out,
because first we're IBM under Passport Advantage, then we're abandoned to
Tivoli, who refuses to participate in Passport Advantage and then they have
to figure out how to convert our licenses to TMP pricing, but then they do
participate in Passport Advantage but this year we're IBM again, and now
they have to figure out how to convert us back to Passport Advantage under
new pricing with metrics that are completely different from the last
go-round, and by the way did I mention that some of our TSM servers qualify
for GSA pricing and some don't? And we get to deal with the same crap on
other formerly-ibm-then-tivoli-then-IBM products like Netview? And that it
has been suggested MORE THAN ONCE here that we drop any Tivoli products,
period, because the licensing is impossible to deal with?

So perhaps the best approach is to call enough different people at Tivoli
until a slender majority of votes in your favor and then buy... Clearly,
the CPUs are created differently is the answer you want. Or, you want the
workstation pricing for all CPUs and CPU is a CPU.

Did I mention how whacked this is?

We've been told BOTH, that it matters whether it's a desktop or a server,
and that it doesn't. By different Tivoli people :>(.

We were told yesterday that a processor is a processor. That it doesn't
matter whether the client runs on a desktop or a server, just how many
processors are being used in the box.

I was speaking with our TSM sales rep earlier today about ordering TSM
client software upgrades. She said that as of this past January, a
factor
in the pricing of a client software license is whether or not the
client is
a server or a desktop and, if a server, how many cpus it has. Has
anyone
else heard anything about this?

Thanks.
