It's true, there is no way of finding exactly what our clients look like in
installations with 1,000's of clients.

I have heard from Tivoli that their intent in future client software is to
provide information back to the server on processor configuration at the
client.

Gretchen, I would think that in your case you would have a pretty good
idea of what server machines you back up and that your open registration
would be almost exclusively for client class machines, i.e. single user
machines.

Nope, a lot of our departments run their own data centers and have their
own servers - either research or administration. Little Exchange servers
are popping up all over campus. They register their accounts just like
our desktops do. They do tend to back up more data, so I do notice them
eventually. However, there are desktops that are larger, so amount of
data is not always a valid criterion. If the contact info is correctly
supplied (the GUID helps if not), I have some chance of tracking down
the culprits. But we, like everyone else, are still in the 'do more with
less' mode and I can't be spending time figuring out how many
processors, client or server, etc. It's enough just to keep the servers
going - and with graduation approaching, dealing with the cleanup of
student accounts and just general maintenance of over 7,000+ accounts.
