Hi Helge,
No I meant 3480 to 3490, because I was mentioning a previous migration.
The new migration would be from 3490 emulation to 3590 emulation.
However after some more research I find I cannot do the migration
I think your 9840 drives must be exclusive TSM use.
Mine are shared between TSM, DFHSM and DB2, cannot be exclusive
Discussion with STK says that the drives that you want to run as 3590 image
need
1) Microcode change (3590 image or 3490, not both)
2) Unitattr parm change on the HSC software
3) Change in the OS390 IODEF to 3590 device.
regards,
John

Hi John,

have you a tool like SCOPE/Strobe/Intune ? so that you can see that the 3590
devices makes 256 KB per IO ?

here is a part from the IBM announcment for tsm 4.2 :

At a Glance
Enhancements to Tivoli Storage Manager for S/390 Edition:

Improves performance (up to 40%) when writing to 3590 tape devices (or
devices that emulate 3590 on OS/390 V2R10 or z/OS systems)

(at site : http://www.ibmlink.ibm.com/usalets&parms=H_201-219 )

in your mail you wrote : ... 3480 to 3490 migration ... i hope you mean
3590 migration !!

TSM 4.2.2
 OS390 2.10
STK 9840
Seeing the note from Helge has set me thinking that I would like the cpu
saving
from 256k block
rather than 32K
I have already been through a 3480 to 3490 migration and then adding pools
using 9840 with device type cartridge.
Are there any differences/gotchas in adding pools using 9840s with a 3590
device class
Thanks,
John
