Hi,
make an incremantal full backup of your system when the SQL service is not
running, as well as the system objects.
when you make a bare metal restore, restore the system objects than the files,
including the SQL files and standard databases,
start the sql service and restore all databases.
When you make a cold bakup of the sql system you make sure that the SQL server
service starts when you restart / restore the system because the database has
got a consistant state to go with all the dll's and server files. The TDP is not
a bare metal restore tool which means that you need a consistant database state
when you restore the SQL system with the BAclient. It has always worked for me.

Hi!
I´m maybe not clear about what I need to know.
About the restore.
I know eveything about how you restore the databas i a normal way.
What I need to know is that.
Is master.mdf dependent on another files?
And yes. Which one?
Becuse today when I restore my machine. Everything works fine accept the
SQL. And to restore the SQL i need to re-install the SQL and install the
Service pack and after that use the TDP to restore the user data.
But I don´t want to install the SQL Server and Service Pack again when I
run a Bare Metal Restore on a machine.
And the only way to do that is to backup master.mdf as a file and restore
the file an ordinary file. And start the SQL Service and aftar that use the
TDP to restore the rest of the data in the SQL.
So please. Just answer my questions how the master.mdf works. And nothing
more.

Hi,
you have to start SQL in single user mode, with the startup parameter -e,
Note:
-e is small and the TDP Documentation says -E I think, when you use -E the
sql
server won't start.

Hi Bo!
I´m already use the TDP for backup the data in the databas. But to recovery
the databas from a disaster do I need to restore the master.mdf before I
use the TDP. So I just wonder how I can backup the master.mdf.
Do I realy need to use a open file manager? And is the master.mdf
syncronized to another files?
If I don´t backup that file(s). And the server going down some how.
I need to reinstall the SQL software and the service pack. That takes to
long time and everyone don´t writeing down what they have done with the SQL
Software.
So we realy need a Bare Metal solution for it. And I think I got a plan.
But I just need answer on my questions.

Hi Christian,
you will need TDP2.2 for SQL (Tivoli Data Protection), to backup the SQL
databases.
and that incl. both master and model.

Emne: Backup MS SQL master.mdf
Hi all TSMers!
I got just a prodject on my desk who says that I need to found a good
disaster recovery solution for Microsoft SQL 2000.
And I know how to get back the system in 5 min. But I still don´t know how
to get back the SQL server with out any installation CDs.
I have come so far so I backup all the program files but I still have
problem to backup master.mdf.
So I got two questions.
Do anyone know if master.mdf need to be syncronize to another files?
And do master.mdf need to backup with a Open File Manager or can TSM take a
backup of that file with out any Open File Manager?
