We run TSM 4.2.1.15 on AIX 4.3.3.
450 clients registered, 370+ clients back up every 24 hours.
Nightly load varies from 120GB to 180GB, 90% small files, up to 1million a
day.
The server is an RS6000 F50 with 2 processors, 1 GB of ram.
Data base is 90% of 33GB.

Expiration runs about 2 hours per day, 4-5 hours weekends.

Ours is an OLD machine; just about ANY RS6000 newer than the F50 should
handle your load nicely, in my opinion (and I'm sure you'll get many
others!). TSM backups are NOT CPU intensive; more processors would not
improve our throughput. We really need another 1 GB of RAM on this machine,
but it's due for mothballing soon.

You will want to configure for fast disk throughput and use high-performance
tape. You will be delighted at how fast an RS6000 pushes I/O; as an old
mainframer, I would not have believed it until I saw the way this RS6000
performs. That said, the issues are all the same as on OS/390 - I/O, I/O,
it's all about I/O. You will want to configure your RS6000 so that you can
spread the I/O over multiple buses, multiple disks. One big RAID set is NOT
a good idea, esp. if your backups are small files. I have a combination of
SSA disk (over 2 adapters) and internal SCSI disk (also spread over 2
adapters) with physical mirroring instead of RAID, to get more speed.

There have also been many posts on the list about good results striping the
I/O. And don't forget the RAM, AIX will use it all to good advantage.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if you would be willing to share some information with me.
We are looking at the possibility of moving our TSM server running on
OS/390 2.10 to AIX. We have a TSM server 4.2.1.9 backing up 200 clients and
nightly and about 220GB of data, data base is 37.5GB at 50% utilization.
What I am looking for is real numbers for AIX.

     RS/6000 model
     AIX version
     TSM version
     # of clients
     amount of data
     DB size.

There have been all kinds of different recommendations as to how this box
should be configured from using SP nodes to a P-690 so I am looking for
some real world working TSM environment numbers.

Any information can be sent to me directly at the e-mail address listed
below.

 Thanks,
    Brian
