I placed a service call and spoke with a tech. The problem we are having is
the RMU dropping off the network and the only way to get it back is to
either reboot the library or pull the RMU out and push it back in to get it
to restart. IBM service told me that the latest firmware wouldn't fix this
problem. THe problem has to do with the broadcast traffic on the network
causing the RMU to drop. THe workaround is to place the RMU on its own
subnet. I don't know if I can convince the client to dedicate a subnet just
so we can remotely "see" the library. We've been doing without for so long
now. IBM service felt that there would be a new release out soon as they
were testing this fix in the labs now.

They also sent me the procedures for updating the RMU over the serial
port....all 18-steps! We've tried upgrading components via the RMU web
application and ended up having to replace a couple LTO drives. If the
firmware upgrade fails in the middle..the drive is toast. Now we do it over
the SCSI for the drives and the serial for the library. And now we know how
to update the RMU over serial connection.

Suggest you stick to IBM "official" firmware as opposed to getting
firmware from other vendors - there might be warranty and/or service
implications. Yes, you use the RMU to update RMU firmware. The 3583 RMU
one of my customers got recently has the latest firmaware on it - it too
has some errors, like pointing to non-existent URLs for pubs. The RMU
tells you the level of the firmware; I compared it to the one at
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/358x/3583/ From there, download the
rmucode.exe - then explode the exe file on a Windows machine. All this is
documented in the 3583 book GA32-0411-03 - download from

Another place to look, might be with Adic, Scalar 100 (Same hardware,
different vendor).

Simplest thing is have your IBM CE do it.

Has anyone updated the RMu firmware on a 3583? I'm looking at the
docs,
searching IBM's site and finding all kinds of stuff on the drives and
library, but nothing on the RMU itself. It almost looks like you have
to use
the RMU to update the RMU, but there is a serial port on the back of
it....

Any help would be VERY appreciated.
