Actually, in the enterprise class accounts Veritas NetBackup and TSM are
about neck and neck right now <2% different. TSM has been gaining market
share slowly. TSM is a storage management tool that has backup and restore
capability. Netbackup only performs backup and restore. Legato had been
steadily losing market share but may have turned that around recently.

TSM and NetBackup are ranked by Gartner almost identically.

TSM is a progressive backup and offers some unique capabilities that no
other product does. Most notably policy based management of the backups and
retentions, including protection against deleted files. A full/incremental
philosophy has holes in it where files can get deleted and not found out
about for some time, say the length of your incremental cycle between fulls
and the file is just gone. There are many other benefits to a progressive
technology, and some challenges to change your understanding of how the file
objects are mananged.

Every day it is becoming even more impossible to take full backups. They
simply take too much time and backup windows are shrinking. Online and
progressive technologies are the only thing we will be able to do in 5 more
years. Remember, everyone argues that if you can not restore in a window
acceptable to your firm you do not have a good system. I will submit that
if you never get the proper backup you have nothing to restore with. So, if
the restore takes a little longer because of a progressive technology and
additional tape mounts so be it. If you are worried about restore because
of hardware failures, spend your money on better hardware. A storage
management tool should be for disaster recovery and malicious or accidental
file deletion recovery.

TSM is the only product that I am aware of that can put a file system back
the way it was to point in time of failure including files deleted. If an
application uses touch files, their backups are no good in a
full/incremental technology whenever you add the incremental after the full
restore. The incremental has no idea what files have been deleted.

Tivoli has stealth marketing, but there are a lot of business partners now.
Find you a good one and work with them.
