Sascha,

As with most everything else, there are multiple ways to accomplish this. An
accurately detailed answer would require more details about your environment,
but there are a few general things to consider.

If performance is your main concern then (most of the time, on most platforms)
a Fibre Channel SAN with LTO tape drives (and/or a large disk pool in TSM)
would be your best bet. If the data consists of many small files, go to disk
first (virtual volumes across the SAN), then migrate to tape. If the data is a
single large file (or mostly sequential data), share your tape drives to the
client (across the SAN) and back up straight to tape. If you have an
"Enterprise Class" storage device, consider using its instant copy
functionality as well.

Also, you will almost always cut your performance in half (double your time -
or worse) on a restore. If it takes 12 hours to backup your data, plan on at
least 24 for the restore. THEN TEST YOUR ENVIRONMENT TO VERIFY YOUR RESTORE
TIMES!

Thank you!

Jeff

Hi,

what is your opinion about backing up or restoring 300GB data with TSM
within 12 hours from one client? Possible or not? Do I have to use a SAN
that I get acceptable transfer rates? If there is anybody out there who
backs up such a big amount of data:

How is your "TSM"-area constructed? (e.g. Server-type, LAN, SAN ...)
