There is much more easy way:
go to http://www.bull.de/pub/
and just download the precompiled installp-ready package! You can find
there also many other GNU packages ready to use.
In the past there was link from www.rs6000.ibm.com/support to Grouppe
Bull's site but I did not checked it recently.

and to ease the pain of others...

I had to go to ftp.software.ibm.com and get
/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/INSTALLP/ppc/rpm.rte
Then had to smitty install the "rpm" package manager.
Then had to get, from the same IBM ftp site,
/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/gzip/gzip-1.2.4a-7.aix4.3.ppc.rpm
Then had to "rpm --install -i gzip-1.2.4a-7.aix4.3.ppc.rpm" just to get to
the point where I could use "gzip" to uncompress the 4.2.2 TSM download.

ARGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now where did I put the valium & vodka ???
