And you need the plan before you build the process.

I've got about 18 TB of data and generate a bit over 650 GB of change on a
daily basis. It doesn't all get copied for off-site. We have test and
development systems with a D/R recovery process of 'rebuild from production
data'. As a result, I've got about a dozen storage pools and only eight get
backed up for off-site. We have 10 LTO drives good for about 15 MB/second
and my nightly copy script runs about 4 hours.

Look at what NEEDS to be off-site. Set up your management classes and
storage pools to match. Automate the copy process. Prior to going with LTO
drives, I had DLT drives; I didn't have TIME to copy my SAP database (about
570 GB of that 650 GB nightly). I had to send the original tapes off-site
instead. We did that for three years. Now, with the LTO drives, I've defined
a different management class and storage pool and start the storage pool
backup as the last step of the SAP backup script.

But you need more than just copies of the data. You'll need somewhere to USE
the data if your data center goes up in smoke. This isn't cheap -- but it's
better than going out of business. You'll need to fully document the
restore/recovery process. It needs to be tested.

It's a big job.

Good luck --
