Thanks for the feedback. My AIX guy has changed the opt to VERBOSE and
restarted the scheduler.

Looks like the client is runing in QUIET mode. Try commenting out the
QUIET option to get the default of VERBOSE so you can see more detail in
dsmsched.log. Maybe then the dsmsched.log file will give a little more
info as to what is going on.

If that doesn't shed any light, then you should contact IBM support for
more in-depth probelm analysis.

Thanks for the response. I have passed this on to my AIX guru.

Unfortunately, I was out yesterday, so he took matters into his own
hand........Here is what he sent me...
*****************************************
Looks like I'm going to have to remove TSM 4.2.1.0 from mail1 and install
4.1.3.something. It failed again last night with these messages in
dsmerror.log.

11/07/01 18:22:20 sessRecvVerb(): Invalid verb received.
11/07/01   18:22:20 sessRecvVerb(): length=0000, verb=00,magic=00
11/07/01   18:22:23 ANS1026E Session rejected: Communications protocol
error
11/07/01   18:22:23 ANS1512E Scheduled event 'BACKUP.MAIL' failed.  Return
code = 4.
11/07/01 19:22:23 TCP/IP received rc 11 trying to accept connection from
server.

Then he sent this:
****************************************
Looks like we still have a problem with TSM on mail1, even after going
back to 4.1.3.0. I'm trying to run a manual incremental on /var/spool/imap
(the biggie) right now.

Here's the latest in dsmerror.log:
11/08/01 18:17:13 sessRecvVerb(): Invalid verb received.
11/08/01   18:17:13 sessRecvVerb(): length=612f, verb=73,magic=30
11/08/01   18:17:15 ANS1026E Session rejected: Communications protocol
error
11/08/01   18:17:15 ANS1512E Scheduled event 'BACKUP.MAIL' failed.  Return
code = 4.
And here's what I see in dsmsched.log:

I apologize for being so verbose.....Didn't want to accidently leave
anything important, out !

Any suggestions ?

We have been struggling with a similar problem. Under the previous
release,
the exclude.list file worked very well, and we had changed the dsm.opt
files
to "domains all-local" or just blank, and the exclude.list files were all
updated. When we upgraded to 4.2.1, many of the exclude.list files
stopped
working. I am going through a few hundred servers changing the dsm.opt
files back to specific domains.
