We're in the same boat - MANY .pst files larger than 500 MB. We have a very
fast network, but the load on the server is getting huge, and a BIG part of
it is those .pst files.

I've been testing the subfile backup capability over the last 2 weeks for
just this reason, and it works great!
Cuts that 500MB .pst backup down to 10-20 MB in cases I've tested. Of
course, I'm sure it depends on how much of the .pst file you change.

My only complaint (a nit) is that the dsmsched.log file still shows the
full size of the file as being sent, instead of the subfile size-- you have
to check results by looking at the total bytes sent stats at the end of the
backup. (Actually for testing I set up a schedule that backs up nothing but
my .pst files so as to get a real understaning of what was happening.)

Now the ONLY config I've tested is:

TSM AIX server 4.1.3
Win2K client 4.2.0

I've done restores with no problem, even done a full bare-metal restore with
no problem. Can't break it, and that's good!. I'm planning to turn it on
system-wide on Nov. 1.
