Depends on the library and how it is configured.
And I only have experience with this using an AIX TSM server:

If you have the library defined to TSM as a SCSI library, you can't have
mixed media.

If you use the STK ACSLS software to drive the library, you can define it to
TSM as a TYPE=ACS library. Then you can support multiple device types (you
just define two separate TSM "libraries" to the same physical library
address). As far as I know, the STK robots are the only ones that can take
on two personalities - ACS or SCSI.

Running ACSLS adds a lot of complexity to your environment, and takes some
getting used to. And be aware that DRM won't do checkouts from ACS
libraries. (You can write scripts to work around it.)

But it makes the conversion from one device type to another REALLY easy.
You put both types of drives in the library. (We went from DLT to 9840.)
Then I gradually moved all the data old from one format to the other with
MOVE DATA commands, while directing all new migration to the new 9840's.
Now we have removed the DLT drives, and when I have time I will convert the
library from ACS back to SCSI.
