I think that you don' t have to use SMIT to define the medium changer or the
drive.
You just have to install the device driver and then define  the medium
changer and the drive
within TSM (define library .... and define drive ....)

I have done it with TSM 4.1.3, AIX 4.3.3 and IBM 3583.
